Project story
Background
Moviot functions as a manufacturer of specialized sensors and provider of data software. Its primary objective revolves around gathering crucial data from various sensors affixed to machinery. This endeavor aims to facilitate predictive maintenance insights, enabling customers to proactively anticipate maintenance requirements and detect irregularities promptly. However, Torben, the CTO of Xtel, has identified an operational inefficiency. Specifically, the support and customer service departments expend significant effort assisting customers in determining their specific needs, occasionally misallocating resources. In response, Moviot's team is committed to addressing this concern by implementing a new webpage structure. This strategic initiative intends to optimize the customer experience, simplifying the process of identifying suitable solutions. The ultimate goal is to streamline operations, ensuring that resources are allocated judiciously and customers can readily access tailored assistance.
Stakeholders
We found that the predominant audience of the website comprises professionals working within various companies' procurement departments. These individuals are consistently involved in seeking out the most suitable hardware solutions to elevate their business's operational efficiency. Subsequently, their responsibilities extend to collating procurement data, performing calculations like Return on Investment (ROI), and presenting the comprehensive plan to their superiors for the ultimate purchase verdict.
  • 1
    Procurement department employee
Involves evaluating different products, creating purchase plans, and reporting data, including ROI.
  • 2
    Purchase decision maker
Involves selecting a product or service based on various factors such as need, quality, cost, and suitability for a particular purpose.
Research
We conducted a collaborative workshop with Martin, the maintenance manager in Boglas who has experience in purchasing. We employed design probes to facilitate this workshop, aiming to better understand the journey of a Procurement department employee. We delved into their research methods for hardware, their product evaluation processes, and the steps involved in making purchase decisions within their team.
5-steps to purchase
We collaborated with Martin to outline the key steps in his purchase process, which comprise roughly five stages:
  • Decision Trigger: Identifying the factors that prompt the team to explore alternative solutions.
  • Information Gathering: Defining goals, budgets, and researching suitable solutions.
  • ROI Calculation: Evaluating ROI and aligning with budget plans.
  • Benefits Analysis: Assessing both short-term and long-term benefits.
  • Payment Considerations: Ensuring the availability of a suitable subscription plan once the purchase decision is approved by the team.
Research
Furthermore, we conducted in-depth follow-ups for each phase of the purchase process.

Key factors involved in decision making
We developed a scale for Martin to prioritize the most critical information required in a purchase decision and the essential data for decision-makers to evaluate the purchase effectively.
Research
Given Martin's repeated emphasis on the significance of ROI, we were keen to determine the level of advancement and precision required for decision-making. Consequently, we devised a scale to gauge the complexity of the calculator they necessitate.

Concept and Prototype delivery
We compile and analyze all design outcomes and research insights into a process book, providing valuable insights for Xtel's future implementation.
Foster website growth
Following the design hand-off, our collaboration with Xtel will persist as we work together to foster project growth.
